Apamea sunset, a photo by CharlesFred on Flickr.

After having thought for the past year that I had lost all my photos from my Syria trip nack in Match 2009, I managed to find them on a hard drive earlier today. This made me very happy and I will be uploading some of these photos over the coming days. Apamea is one of teh major Roman sites in Syria and is situated aboyt 40 kms west of Hama, overlooking thye very fertile Orontes valley.

The three best racehorses in the world - Frankel (rated 140)

Many people, myself included, think that Frankel is the best horse who has ever raced, having won all 14 of his starts, mostly in championship races. There is one horse who is higher in the ratings, which was Dancing Brave in 1986. He was also a brilliant horse who won one of the best Prix de l'Arc de Triomphes ever in scintillating style. However, much as I loved that horse, I still think Frankel is better. He now becomes a stallion with a covering fee to start off with of GBP 125,000 a go.

Autumn Glory

The second weekend of November often sees Amsterdam at its most colurful, with the leaves all having turned a beautiful colour and if thgis is combined with sunshine, it all becomes very beautiful. Time to make the most of it as within a couple of weeks the leaves will have fallen and Amsterdam will become dull and grey for the following four months until mid-March.

... it being Remembrance Sunday, timed exactly for Armistice Day. Our unfortunate Uncle Jack died of wounds only weeks before the end of the fighting in Flanders.

I can remember seeing this little creature as if it was yesterday, instead of being seven years ago during our first visit to Apamea in central Syria.

The northern Syrian countryside in high summer

Many of the olives grown in Syria used to be exported to Italy to make extra virgin olive oil...

Wall of Damascus - Twilight Effect

As an antidote to the terrible images coming from Syria these days, I thought it would be nice to upload some illustrations from a more peaceful time in that beautiful country.

Illustration by Margaret Thomas from the John Kelman book ' From Damascus to Palmyra; from 1908.

More natural colour, a photo by CharlesFred on Flickr.

This is some sort of weed which has established itself in front of our house. We are not exactly sure what it is called but in Dutch it could Gekrikde Druivenkruid - Curly Grapeweed. We came back from a short walk on Saturday to see someone taking a very keen interest in the plant. He had come all the way from Nijmegen in the east of the country to see it, having read about our weed on the internt somewhere... very strange!

A very crisp close-up of a dahlia in front of teh house. Unfortunately, it disappeared a day or two after this photo was taken...

I used my 50mm macro lens for such shots and I am very happy with the way many of them turn out,
